Future Career
The question of what I want to do when I get older has become increasingly challenging, which is messed up because I thought it was supposed to get easier as I got older. I chose business, specifically marketing, as a major because at the time it seemed the most realistic and would give me a chance to earn a decent income. I have changed so much in the past 3 years that it has been hard for me to be decisive on a career path. I decided that I wanted to try and do marketing in an industry that I am enthusiastic about and would have fun in, so I set my path towards film (entertainment) marketing. Film marketing deals with driving the desired audience into theaters for movies. The whole process of film and making movies has always been a big interest of mine, so I started to look into jobs that my major related to in that field.
The job that I would be shooting for is honestly any in this field. There are those who work on video advertisements and promotional hype, or product placement strategies, or copywriting and marketing management. An example of a job is this one, for HBO Max as the marketing coordinator. There is no GPA requirement but requires a major in a related field. The only other requirement is at least 2 years of experience, and a love for storytelling, movies, and television. I obviously do not have 2 years of experience, so I would need to get an entry level job first like a social media coordinator, to get my foot in the door. An internship would also provide good experience, and many studios offer them. I would want to have a job at somewhere like Warner Brothers, and I don't think my identity would differ depending on the company besides maybe my favorite movies (bad joke). I have always loved film and television which is why I would thoroughly enjoy a job in this field.

Hi Adam!
ReplyDeleteThese sound like awesome positions that are a great mix of the skill set that you acquired in college through your studies and your own personal interest! Marketing and entertainment are both very different from what I have studied. What about the entertainment business makes you attracted to it specifically? What makes Warner Brothers Studio stand out as a company that you would want to be a part of? How has this class's focus on knowing your audience and crafting a message for them compared to some of the content in your marketing classes? While the medium is different, is their some overlap? differences? any major take aways?
I do think some aspects of your identity however would be highlighted more than others depending on the company. I am sure somewhere like Disney has its own distinct culture compared to Warner Bros or a TV network.
Best of luck!
Hi Adam,
ReplyDeleteI think Marketing is a great field to go into but I understand your struggle as it is not easy to decide on a career when you first start college. I have even struggled with that as a senior as graduation is approaching fast. I started out with a Marketing degree in community college, so I share that interest in business with you. That is awesome that you are interested in marketing in the film industry. California is definitely a great place for a job in that field, especially anywhere near Los Angeles. Do you plan to move to the area after you graduate to pursue a job in LA? It is definitely challenging to find job positions for college graduates, especially given the times where jobs have transitioned to remote positions and a lot of companies have furloughed employees due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope things are back to normal in no time and I wish you success in the field.
